Trigger Point Release
What is a Trigger Point?
Trigger points develop in the myofascial. Myofascial pain often results from a muscle injury or repetitive strain. When stressed or injured, muscles often form trigger points, like contracted knots, that cause pain and tightness. Trigger points are an extremely common cause of pain and are painful when pressed on, causing a shortening of the muscle fibers and generating referred pain (trigger point in one muscle can create pain in another part of the body).
Common causes of trigger point development are:
- Injury sustained by a fall or motor vehicle accident.
- Bad posture due to compensation for pain.
- Muscle overuse and respective micro-trauma – weightlifting.
- Stress.
- Lack of exercise.
- Chronic stress condition – anxiety, depression, psychological stress trauma,
- Vitamin deficiencies – vitamin C, D, B, folic acid, iron.
- Sleep disturbance.
- Joint problems and hypermobility.
What is Trigger Point Therapy?
Trigger point therapy is performed by pressing and holding directly on top of the trigger points in your muscles. This process temporarily cuts off circulation to the muscle tissue to increase the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide signals your body to open up microcapillaries, thus bringing in more blood flow and breaking the pain-spasm-pain cycle.
