Post Isometric Relaxation
What is Post Isometric Relaxation?
Post Isometric Relaxation is a technique most commonly used for treating pain in postural muscles that are responsible for: walking, sitting, and standing. These muscles include those found in the neck and the base of your head, as well as your mid-back and your chest, and are often injured in automobile accidents. When the head experiences sudden movement — front, back, or side to side, it’s prone to muscle damage as well as damage to ligaments and connective tissues.
This method is also used for treating muscles in the lower body such as the hamstrings, rectus femoris, quadriceps, and thigh muscles.
What does it do?
The post-isometric relaxation technique begins by placing the muscle in a stretched position. There is a fine line between lengthening muscles by gently stretching them, and elongating them to the point of triggering the stretch reflex, a protective response that contracts the muscle, causing the undesirable effect of tightening the targeted muscle. Then an isometric contraction is exerted against minimal resistance. Relaxation and then gentle stretch follow as the muscle releases. This process is designed to relax tight muscles without initiating this reflex and will reduce muscle spasms and increase the range of motion.
