Active Release Technique
What is Active Release Technique?
Active Release Techniques (ART) is an effective soft tissue method that focuses on relieving tissue tension via the removal of fibrosis/adhesions which can develop in tissues as a result of overload due to repetitive use. These disorders may lead to muscular weakness, numbness, aching, tingling, and burning sensations. ART has been reported to be both a diagnostic and a treatment technique.
How does ART work?
As scar tissue builds up, the affected area receives less blood supply and becomes shorter and weaker, which results in the decrease of motion and function of the muscles and joints involved. This can also cause pain, as well as numbness and tingling. During an active release treatment, the provider uses his or her hands to detect adhesions (a band of scar tissue that joins two surfaces of the body that are usually separate) in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, facia, and nerves. Once the root cause is identified, the provider applies deep tension at the area of tenderness while the patient moves the injury site from a shortened to a lengthened position. Plainly, it’s similar to a massage but with motion and stretching, and the provider will use targeted contact points rather than broad strokes.
