Post-operative Therapy
What is Post-operative Therapy?
Physical therapy is the most important step of recovery after undergoing surgery. Immediately after orthopedic surgery, the healing process begins. What you do in your post-operative period is almost as important as the surgery because in some cases with improper healing the surgery may have to be repeated. Post-op therapy is a key element of recovery and is necessary to restore strength, joint movement, and flexibility. Physical therapy is also an excellent option for managing pain and helps many patients limit the use of opioid medications.
Post-operative therapy encompasses a wide array of treatments, all available at H2T PT, and listed on our services page for more in-depth information. Studies show that patients that stay in bed following surgery lose muscle strength as well as heart and lung capacity. A carefully planned and supervised post-op physical therapy program helps patients return to daily activities faster and helps manage pain and regain strength and use of their joints.
Surgeons typically recommend that physical therapy treatments begin right after surgery. They will start off with simple exercises that will become more intense as you progress in your recovery stages. It is particularly important after meniscus and ACL repairs, rotator cuff repairs, spinal surgeries, and joint replacement surgeries. Please consult with your surgeon that you are ready to begin treatment prior to making an appointment.
